Dress Like a GI Joe Character This Halloween

G.I. Joe is a media franchise that made the G.I. Joe cartoon series and G.I. Joe animated movies from the 80s, from which the now-famous articulated toy figures are based. The franchise has hit the big screens recently, with the live-action movie G.I. Joe - The Return of Cobra. The action figures and other merchandise, as well as the films and cartoons themselves, are part of a large enterprise owned by Hasbro.

The first line of toys embodied the four different branches of the United States Armed Forces. These four toy lines are the Army Action Soldiers, Navy Action Sailors, Air Force Action Pilots, and Action Marines. The "G.I." in G.I. Joe stands for the phrase "Government Issue", which was a generic label for many ground-force U.S. soldiers, even before the toy line was created. The manufacture of G.I. Joe toys actually birthed the term "action figure".

The Hasbro toy company, under the trademark "G.I. Joe," created two distinct toy series. The initial toy line comprised various 12-inch action figures that were made towards the "realistic' aesthetic, compared to other toys of that time. The Palitov company of the United Kingdom licensed this line and distributed it to the public as Action Man figures. 1982 saw the line's relaunch into what we know as G.I. Joe toys today. The well-articulated, 3 and ¾-inch toys were complemented by playsets, vehicles, and a fleshed-out back story, depicting the war between G.I. Joe and Cobra Command.

The recent G.I. Joe movie saw the development of more sophisticated looking costumes, backed up by seemingly improbable military technology. The wondrous armaments from the film saw camouflage suits based on camera technology, accelerator suits that amplified the strength and reflexes of the already formidable wearer, and lightweight liquid armor able to withstand almost any blows.
