Avatar - The Legend of Aang - A Synopsis

Avatar: The Last Airbender (a.k.a Avatar the Legend of Aang) is a digitally animated cartoon that aired for almost three years (i.e., 2005 to 2008) on the Nickelodeon channel. The show itself was originally written and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Brian Konietzko. The show takes place in an Asian setting, with a character named "Aang" serving as the hero. Aang and all of the friends whom he meets on his journey must find the "firelord", defeat him, and bring the battle against the Fire Nation to a halt.

Astoundingly, on average, more than five million people tuned in to watch the show each time it aired- it was not only popular with young viewers, but aged critics, parents, young adults, and older teenagers, too. Having been nominated for a variety of awards, Nickelodeon has recently opted to have the creators produce more seasons, and because the show has garnished so much popularity, they are asking for movies to be made based on the show, also. Toys, such as video games, magazines, collectible figures and models, cards, and blocks have emerged from the story's huge success. Thus, the incredible power of this epic tale is influencing the lives of many individuals worldwide, not just young teenagers, and it is paramount to recognize that the Avatar series has been going strongly for over four years.

With such a wide reverence of this series, a small synopsis of the story is important. As briefly discussed above, Aang, a twelve-year old, learns that he is the new "avatar", which he cannot readily accept. Upon hearing that he is the new avatar, Aang runs away on his pet bison (i.e., Appa), and, unfortunately, he gets trapped inside of an iceberg. While he is detained inside of the iceberg, the Fire Lord (i.e., the leader of the Fire Nations) causes havoc on the rest of the world, and he wants to make sure that the newest Avatar (i.e., Aang) does not ruin his chances of ruling the world. Eventually, though, Aang and Appa are broken out of the iceberg about one-hundred years later, and the two bond with other people. They begin a journey and stop all attempts of the Fire Nation trying to contaminate the planet (e.g., ships trying to take over the North Pole). Aang then becomes a master "waterboarder", is injured badly by a Fire Nation commander (i.e., Azula), and is thought to be dead. Aang, however, does not die, and he and his comrades manage to destroy the Fire Lord and get a new Fire Lord established that promises to bring peace and harmony to the world. Avatar The Legend of Aang is a great show for people of all ages.

Early Learning Tips - Why Multipurpose Toys Are the Best

Do you know why multipurpose toys are the best at promoting cognitive development in the youngest children? You will and know specific toys to choose after you read this article. Brain development in the youngest children is best fostered by unstructured creative play time vs. rote learning and memorization.

I recently came across an interesting article, "Rethinking Children's Play" in the National PTA's Our Children magazine. The article explains how children learn through play, then traces the changes in playtime and toys from the latter half of the 20th century until today, significantly noting that media-linked toys can be traced directly to FCC deregulation in 1984. Now TV shows and movies can explicitly market to children.

Think about the typical toys and action figures or video games linked to TV programs or movies. The biggest problem, per the PTA, is that many of these toys just tell children how to play and use the toys to imitate what they see on the screen.

So, which toys are the best?

You can get many of the best kinds of educational learning and cognitive development toys that facilitate your child's intellectual, social and emotional development from websites that specialize in developmental expert-selected toys. Still, the best toys are those that can be used in a variety of ways, some of which your child will invent themselves.

Examples of unstructured, multipurpose toys include clay, blocks, balls, and pretend play toys like wagons, generic toy figures, stuffed animals and baby dolls--all of these encourage play that children can control and shape to meet their individual needs over time. The best thing is that some of these toys are also the most inexpensive or free (like stackable plastic containers and boxes around the house)!

It's good to have educational play interactions with your little one, but also let them have regular, uninterrupted playtime (away from the TV or DVD player) and let them know that play is important by encouraging it every day.

Whatever you do, make thoughtful choices about the toys and media you introduce to your child -- focus on ones that promote true playtime, allowing them the fullest range of freedom and creativity.

Doll Houses Aren't Just For Girls

The dollhouse market is inundated with toys and miniatures geared towards young girls. In every toy store across the world, you can find various styles and sizes all built towards the girl who wants to imagine and "play house". There is nothing wrong with any of these houses, and they foster healthy play and enjoyment.

However, fifty percent of the population seems may seem somewhat forgotten by the majority of the dollhouse market: boys.

When you think of boys' toys, the assumption is that boys need trucks, action figures, or sporting goods like a new baseball, basketball, or hockey stick. Yet, there is a small market of boy's dollhouses.

Many of these "dollhouses" are described in a way that would appeal to the rough-and-tumble boy who likes to imagine he is a superhero, a firefighter, a cowboy, an astronaut, or anything else. You won't find any of these in the regular toy section as you'd find the normal dollhouses. They are cleverly camouflaged in the action-figure aisle under the guise of a fortress or a space base.

Over the years, "dollhouses" for boys have taken on themes such as Castle Grey Skull from the He-Man series and the G.I. Joe Command Headquarters Command Centre. Both these fortresses contained some of the same imaginative elements as a regular dollhouse: functioning doors, moveable pieces, and places to sit your "action figure" down after a long day.

Even today, you can find a boy's "dollhouse" in the form of Captain Jack Sparrow's ship, The Black Pearl, from the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The trick to getting boys interested is focusing on the elements that they enjoy.

You can find farms that can foster the development of your young future cowboy. Give him a hat and a lasso, and the rest will take care of itself. There are no rules in how you have to play with a dollhouse. NASA even has model space stations, shuttles, and action figures for your would-be astronaut.

The only limitation in knowing what can be considered a boy's dollhouse is the extent of one's imagination. Sometimes finding a "dollhouse" that's directed towards boys' tastes takes a little thinking outside the box and changing the way we see things.

The next time you think about dollhouses as a gift, don't forget about all the young boys in your life. You may be missing out on a great toy that the boys will never stop thanking you for.

AdWords Campaigns - Can There Be Too Many?

One concern expressed by clients employing a service to handle their Google AdWords PPC advertising is the question of spreading campaigns too thinly. For companies and businesses dealing in multiple ventures, especially, are aware of their budgets and interested in maximizing pay per click ads to the best use, while at the same they want to be certain the money is spent wisely. When you consider how companies budget advertising in other media, the realm of online advertising offers a bit of diversity, and it can be easy to get lost in multiple campaigns.

When to Consider Multiple Campaigns in AdWords

Say you operate a retail business specializing in collectibles. Between trading cards and action figures, plush toys and autographs, you have a wide range of keywords on which to draw when planning online ads. A general ad for your collectibles store may not attract the level of traffic you desire when you consider that collectors will use the Internet to search for specific objects, so in this case it is good to have different campaigns highlighting your products.

Sports cards
Sports memorabilia
Plush toys
Dolls
Movie memorabilia

On the other hand, if your business is limited to two primary purposes or products, there may not be a need spread out your advertising dollars. The owner of a camping store, for example, may wish to focus on ads detailing camping equipment in general, as customers searching for these items are apt to buy several different things for a trip.

One Ad Per Keyword?

In order to retain high quality ratings in Google (and consequently lower bid prices on desired keywords), PPC managers will keep keyword bids as close to the ad text as possible. The more relevant the keywords are to the ad, naturally the less you will be charged as Internet users click through to your site (or a landing page tailored to your ad). This may beg the question: how detailed should your keyword lists be? Going back to the sports collectibles example, if you only deal in baseball cards, do you want to split your campaign into several ads, each representing a different team:

Atlanta Braves keywords for an Atlanta Braves card ad
New York Yankees keywords for a Yankees card ad
and so on...

In the realm of PPC advertising, there really are no right or wrong answers, as each company must tailor ad plans to suit their budgets and other needs. The best recourse is to experiment with campaigns and ads, monitoring closely to see where the successes happen. The more you learn about how AdWords can work for you, the better return on investment you're likely to see.

Information About Clamp's Angelic Layer

In 2001, Clamp, a important four females Japanese Manga/cartoon creative group, brought their 1999 Manga, Kidou Tenshi Angelic Layer to the USA under the alias Angelic Layer. Angelic Layer is about a 12 year old child, Misaki Suzuhara, who just relocates to Tokyo (for what reason you would not discover till later but anyways). She notices two figures battling on a big screen in the city fighting it out in an ring known as Angelic Layer. She turns interested in this and wants to picked herself. She meets this fellow covered in a physician uniform named Icchan (Mr. Icchan), who seems to already know quite a bit about her, teaches her the groundwork of the sport. After knowing the game she wins her original ranked match and is picked to selected in a tournament where she can meet one of her rivals and soon to be friend.

Later on she finds herself becoming very talented at this activity like it was always in her blood to play this sport, and to find out that a very influential person to her has been the dominator of this game for some time, her mom. Misaki and her mom fight it out in an grand battle that is filled with emotion, determination, and glorification.

Overall, this anime represents that no matter how huge or tiny you are, overcoming the hardest obstacles can be achieved as long as you believe in yourself and your abilities. This cartoon hits the hearts of every growing teen facing hardships in their life.

Naruto Manga Series - Profile and Storyline

The Naruto manga series is the creation of Masashi Kishimoto, a former apprentice of Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragonball Z. Similar to Dragonball, Naruto is full of striking characters and thrilling fight scenes.

In 1999, Naruto made its debut in Shonen Jump, the most popular shonen manga magazine in Japan. Within no time, Naruto became the favorite amongst manga readers, and is today one of the most popular manga series worldwide. Fans are thrilled by the adventures of Naruto Uzumaki and the ninjas of Konoha village. Due to its worldwide popularity, Naruto has been translated into several languages such as Chinese, English, French, German and Korean. In North America, the Naruto series appears in the English language edition of Shonen Jump magazine, and is also currently a top rated series on Cartoon Network.

The Naruto storyline traces the adventures of a teen ninja-in-training: Naruto Uzumaki. Naruto was orphaned at birth, and loves to joke around and be the centre of attention. He gets poor grades at the ninja academy, and most of the adults in the village shun him.

But Naruto has a secret: his body is the living prison for the Nine-Tailed Fox Demon, which almost destroyed the Village Hidden in the Leaves fifteen years ago. The 39 - and counting - volume Naruto series is an epic journey which follows the growth and development of Naruto from a brat and misfit, into a powerful ninja capable of becoming the next Hokage or leader of the Konoha village.

The other key characters in Naruto are Sasuke and Sakura, who are also genin or junior ninja. Sasuke is talented but tormented, while Sakura is intelligent and spunky. This triad is mentored by Kakashi, a jonin or senior ninja, who is laid back and enjoys tacky 'adult' fiction, as well as amazing fighting techniques.

As the story progresses, many other ninjas make an entry from Konoha and other rival villages. Each of these comes with their own distinct personalities, battle techniques, rivalries, as well as loyalties. The trio of Naruto and his friends find themselves face to face with some fearsome opponents, in an ultimate test of battle skills. Some of their most challenging opponents include Orochimaru, the evil snake ninja, and Zabusa Momochi, a ruthless assassin for hire.

Naruto is published by Shonen Jump / VIZ Media in the US, and Shonen Jump / Shueisha is the series' Japanese publisher. There are currently 39 volumes of Naruto and counting. The main genres of Naruto are Shonen (Boys') Manga, action/ adventure, drama and martial arts action. The content rating of Naruto is Teens - Age 13+ for martial arts violence.

Avatar Book 3 - The Plot and Ideas

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular cartoon show displayed regularly on the Nickelodeon channel. Created in 2005, the series is just as successful as it was back then, as is apparent in the large demand of fans requesting movies, video games, action figures, music, magazines, and other venues.

The story takes place in an Asian city, and Asian fighters use sparring styles (e.g., Tai Chi, Ba Gua, etc.) that are, of course, influenced by Asian cultures. Fascinatingly, the show has been nominated for prestigious awards (e.g., Emmy Awards, etc.), too. Thus, when Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko produced the show back in 2005 they probably had no idea that their creation would become one of the greatest animated cartoons (and fad) of the last decade.

There are three books in the Avatar series, and the central theme of the story is this: a young boy, Aang, is chosen as a the "avatar", a position he hesitantly accepts. Aang and his pet bison, Appa, run away and get trapped in an iceberg, but are eventually freed (one-hundred years into the future) by individuals whom he and Appa befriend. He and his comrades go on a quest to stop the evil Fire Lord and Fire Nation (i.e., the antagonists of the series) from polluting the world in many ways, such as ensuring that the pirates do not seize the North Pole.

Aang becomes a professional water bender and accomplishes other tasks along the way, but eventually he is seriously injured by an evil nemesis: Azula. Thus, book two ends with Aang in critical danger, and this is where the author(s) leads up to the exciting climax of Avatar Book 3.

In Avatar Book 3, readers learn that Ba Sing Se, the capitol of the Earth, has been taken over, and that Aang has awakened alive on a Fire Nation's ship. One of his friends, Sokka, decides that it is time to defeat the current Fire Lord. Thus, they carry on towards the palace of the Fire Lord, but find that the Fire Lord is not there. Eventually, Sokka comes up with a scheme to kill Azula and the Fire Lord; however, Aang, as he is harmonius and peaceful, swears not to take the life of any living being.

Aang, although peaceful, reluctantly takes on the Fire Lord, while his comrades (i.e., Sokka et al.) battle Azula. The protagonists, of course, are victorious, and Aang nearly kills the Fire Lord in his rage; however, he gets a grip on reality and stops before ending his life. With peace and order restored, Aang appoints his trusting friend, Zuko, as the new Fire Lord so that the world will not have to worry about any more destruction at the hands of a corrupt being.

Flash Animation Actionscript - Top 10 Basic Codes Needed

Here's a list of the 10 most useful codes you can use in any Flash version. These are essential for creating Websites, Games, or interactive animations. Actionscript can go under multiple places. (T) means that this code would be put under the Actions of a frame in the Timeline. (M) means this code would go on the Actions of a MovieClip.

1. stop(); (T) Most useful code and most basic. It will stop an animation on whatever frame the code is put on. If I am making a game or opening screen to a movie, this is a must.

2. play(); (T) The opposite the the last code. Put under the timeline to start the animation back up.

3. gotoAndPlay(); (T) This code is much more useful and more common than the last and allows you to tell the animation to skip to a certain frame of the animation. Essential for games. The number of the frame you want to go to is put inside the parenthesis in it. For example gotoAndPlay(10);

4. gotoAndStop(); (T) This code skips to a certain frame of the animation, but then stops at that frame. Essential for games. The number of the frame you want to go to is put inside the parenthesis in it. For example gotoAndPlay(10);

5. on(Release){ } (M) This code turns any movieclip have the same functionality of a button, meaning that you don't ever have to worry about ever creating Buttons. Any actions you want the button to do after clicking on it is placed inside the brackets. I have this code on ever link or button on my website. Its helpful to make a box with 0 alpha inside the movieclip to serve as a hit area for the button.

6. on(rollOver){ } (M) Similar to the above code. Except instead of making an action happen once you click on a button, it happens when the mouse rolls over it. Its helpful to make a box with 0 alpha inside the movieclip to serve as a hit area for the button.

7. on(rollOut){ } (M) Same thing as above but this makes an action happen when you roll your mouse off the button.

8. ifFrameLoaded ("end") { (T) A little bit more complicated here. This code is all you need to make a

gotoAndPlay ("start"); preloader work. You just name the last frame in an animation "end" and
} the second frame "start". Put this code on the first frame with a little loading animation to make it more interesting. The code means that if the last frame has loaded (aka "end") then its ok to go to and play the first frame called "start".

9. if( ){ } (T) or (M) The if statement is essential for harder programming. It means that if "a" happens then make flash do "b". The "a" part goes in the parenthesis and the "b" part goes in the brackets. An example would be if(section == 1){ gotoAndPlay(10); } which means that the movie would go to frame 10 only if the variable section (defined earlier) was set equal to 1. It is important to note that doubls =s are needed instead of one = when used in the parenthesis of an if statement

10. _root. and this. (T) or (M) These two codes go in front of many other statements in certain important situations. _root. is needed if you're refering to the main movie timeline. And this. is needed if your reffering to the movieclip that you're putting the code on. So if you want the animation inside of a movieclip to go to a certain frame inside it then you would write this.gotoAndPlay(2); If you want the main movie to change alpha for example then you'd write _root.alpha = 50;

There you go. Those are the top 10 most essential codes for Flash Animation needed for interactivity.

The War For the Holy Grail Has Begun Again! Fate Stay Night Will Soon Be Available on DVD

MVM regularly release high quality anime movies and TV series'. However, I have to admit that none of them have been quite like Fate Stay Night. This new anime TV series is going to be released on the 4th of January 2010 and I've been lucky enough to have a preview of the content. I have to say I'm very impressed and so far I can't wait for the release. But, is it everyone's cup of tea?

The DVD release that I've seen is just the first four episodes of the 24 episode series called Fate Stay Night. It follows the story of a young master named Shirou. He ends up getting involved in a massive war that will determine everyone's fate. The war is fought over the Holy Grail which is said to hold enormous power.

What's cool about this series is that it really builds up the characters and it's not long before you're hooked. However, I will say that it's not for everyone. Most anime series' are very light hearted and fun. Whereas Fate Stay Night is a little more dramatic and is certainly more adventurous.

It'll be rated 15 as well which means that anyone under 15 will be too young to watch it due to violence and the story line, I believe. The first DVD release will include the first four episodes: The First Day; Fateful Night; Opening Act; The Strongest Enemy.

For people who love this sort of thing, it's certainly a great DVD and really worth the purchase. However, if you're not into anime then it's a good idea to avoid this release. MVM are one of the only companies who release DVDs of this nature in the UK and for that reason it's anime at it's best.

The original story is based on the Japanese visual novel game of the same name and is actually a really intense story that gets you very involved. So, if anime is your scene and you like this sort of thing then this DVD will really get you going. Fate Stay Night isn't for everyone though so beware.

What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Guns look just like the video game; authentic sounds and lights; fun with multiple players or alone

The Bad: Laser sensor not always accurate; uses a lot of batteries

In a Nutshell: Whether you're a fan of Halo or not, you'll have a lot of fun playing laser tag with these authentic-looking Halo replica guns
At a Glance

Ages: 12 and up
Requires: 4 AA batteries for each gun and 3 AA batteries for each target
Realistic Looking Design
For fans of the video game, these Plasma Pistols will look like they were pulled right out of the computer screen. Made of a durable hard plastic and carefully crafted and colored to look just like its video game counterpart, we were very impressed with the hefty, build quality. The likeness doesn't end with just the physical look; the plasma gun also lights up in the appropriate spots, creates realistic sounds, and even has details like overheating sounds. The guns feel wonderful in the hand and aren't uncomfortable in any way.

Laser Tag Fun
The guns aren't just collectible replicas; they're functional and with them, you can play a great game of laser tag with your friends. This set includes two guns and two target units, enough for a two player game, but more guns can be purchased to increase the number of players.

To begin play, simply flip the switch to on both the gun and the target. The target unit has a belt clip for easy attachment to the player's body. With each shot you will hear the firing sound from the game, and the tip will light up. When you hit the target, it flashes and makes a sound.

The target has six shield levels that are indicated by lights on the unit, and the game is over when all six shield levels are depleted. Just as in the video game, you can create a super shot by holding the trigger down for at least three seconds and then releasing. This super shot inflicts more damage but will temporarily overheat the gun and disable it. When ammo is used up, a push of the reload button lets you resume. Also, like in the video game, the target will regenerate shield levels if not hit for 20 seconds.

Long Range
We were able to test the target from about 50 feet away without any problems. (The instruction booklet claims a range of 92 feet. ) One minor annoyance we encountered was that the laser tracking device wasn't especially accurate; we would get "hits" even when we weren't aiming straight at the target. This was especially noticeable in short distances and while playing one-player target practice. With multiple players, there was so much running around and the target was so difficult to hit that we did not notice.

Batteries Required
Each Plasma Pistol requires 4 AA batteries to operate and each target needs 3 AA batteries, meaning a total of 14 batteries are needed for a two player game. Investing in rechargeable batteries might be wise and would save money in the long run. The guns and targets will enter sleep mode if it detects no activity for 10 minutes, saving battery life.

What's in the Box
Two covenant plasma pistols, two targets, user manual.

Voltron Toys - Thirty Years of Popularity

Kids who grew up in the eighties will undoubtedly have fond memories of Voltron: Defender of the Universe, one of several Japanese 'super robot' animated series adopted for American television in the eighties. Airing from 1984-85, the series revolved around teams of pilots who flew spaceships that could be combined into the mighty robot Voltron. The two incarnations of the Voltron series consisting of vehicles (series 1) and lion robots (series 2) were adapted from the Japanese anime series respectively entitled Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV and Beast King Go Lion. The most popular version featured robotic lions piloted by the team called Voltron Force who combined their lions into a super robot warrior.

Although the original adapted series lasted only two seasons in America, it gained a huge fan following like it did in Japan. This immense popularity of Voltron in the US and Go Lion in Japan inspired toy makers to create toys based the cartoon. Although the American version of Voltron was never shown in Japan, a Japanese toymaker still capitalized on the international popularity of the series to release a line of die-cast metal toys featuring vehicles and lions from the show; these were later distributed in the US by Matchbox. The rights to produce Voltron toys were then acquired by Panosh Place, which released 3-3/4" versions of the vehicles and characters featured in the show, as well as a playset featuring the Castle of Lions.

The license then briefly passed to a company called LJN which released a couple of Voltron Vehicle models as well as some versions of the Voltron III robot. In the '90s the license passed to Trendmasters, which released new versions of the die-cast Lion Force toys as well as Stealth Voltron and Voltrex (a dinosaur version of the Voltron robot) figures. These toys are among the most popular with collectors because of their playability and the overall high quality of their construction.

At present, American toy company Toynami holds the Voltron license and has produced several Voltron sets, including the Masterpiece Collection (where the figures were made of die-cast metal) and the Collector's Gift Set (with figures made of plastic), as well as I-Men sets, which are miniatures of characters from the show.

The Voltron property continues to be popular among fans old and new, and two new projects are planned: an animated series, Voltron Force, set to air on Nickelodeon in 2010, and a long-gestating live-action movie, whose development is currently delayed due to a legal battle between Voltron's American distributor, World Events Productions, and Toei Company, over alleged copyright infringement. If these projects take off, expect to see more new Voltron sets produced, as well as intensified demand among collectors for the classic toys.

Keeping Kids Happy on Long Car Trips - Plan For Fun!

I was first confronted with this daunting dilemma while managing my neighborhood toy store. A frazzled mother came in hoping to find some ideas for keeping her busy kids happy on a car trip to her parents home. After working there for six years before becoming a mother myself it has become clear that parents quite capable of tackling everyday parenting issues often freeze up when it comes time to bringing their little ones on long trips in the car. They have no idea how they are going to avoid chaotic meltdowns, hours of screaming or "are we there yet" style whining. There is hope and with a little planning most if not all of these situations can be avoided.

Let's get the obvious distraction tactics out of the way so we can get into the really good stuff. A portable DVD player, along with some classic favorites or some new never before seen stuff, while this can depend upon the age groups and personalities of your kids, you know what will work better - I always try for both. You can download children's books on "tape" via pod-casts and bringing along favorite upbeat tunes for you and the kids is always a good idea. Allowing ipods and mp3 players is also an option but you may want to set limits on them as I often do so be sure to discuss these limits with the kids beforehand. I think the same applies to hand held games like Nintendo DS - set up any limitations or turn taking guidelines you'd like to have beforehand in order to avoid disagreements later.

About a month before your trip grab a laundry basket and go through the house with two thoughts in mind a) what toys/activities are their favorites and b)can that be done in the car. For the younger kids, you may not want to let them know you're doing this and for the older ones they might be able to do this themselves. Great, now that you have your pile of stuff pick out the best and keep it hidden until the trip so that you will be armed with toys that have a new appeal but are also bankable favorites for your trip! Some ideas, card games, favorite stuffies, action figures, polly pockets and transformers, any travel games etc. Many times I'll pack each kid a little bag of their own but as our family has grown I have found it easier to keep one fun bag at the ready rather than deal with too much stuff underfoot in the van.

Next make a trip to the nearest dollar store and choose squishy, touchable stuff, like slinkies, sticky stretchy toys, activity and coloring books, blank and lined notebooks, noisemakers (it's better to hear a harmonica than a screaming toddler) small puzzles than can be done on a book on a lap, magnetic play boards, sticker activities, chewing gum in case you need to drive through any mountains it will help ears to "pop" and my personal favorite, glo-in-the-dark necklaces, bracelets, etc for when it's too dark to do anything else - be sure to buy the non-toxic ones as my second child tends to bite them after an hour or so! We even placed them around the hotel room as night lights for the kids to navigate their way around a strange room at night!

Consider making your own games - older kids can help with this! Car Bingo is a classic in my family, simply take squares of paper then with a thick black marker and a ruler draw four or five lines down, and the same across, then after a trip to the dollar store put stickers of farm animals, cars, trucks, road signs, wildlife, dogs, birds, cats etc. in each square, make one card for each traveler, but not the driver, and simply have the kids mark them as they spot the things on their cards - a line is a bingo! Then the cards get passed along and a new game begins. The best way to mark them is to get them laminated and then use a crayon to mark and a facial tissue to rub off.

Other games include looking for neat license plates, red barns, counting horses or the classic punch buggy game - minus the hitting, we slap the seat in our car. Another classic with my family involves a deck of cue cards with a thing to find on each one. Road signs, railroad crossings, emergency vehicles, churches, speed limits, pylons, animal crossings, gas stations, favorite restaurants etc. We make up the cards beforehand and to play we deal out 3 at a time, when you spot one of your items you put the card in your lap, score a point and draw another card, first to five wins! Variations can involve each item having different points values, or event cards like steal a point card from another player, choose one card and place it in your points pile, lose or gain one point, trade hands with another player, etc. Be creative and inventive, maybe you can add in landmarks or rules specific to your route of travel!

A final thought, consider stopping along the way at fun, free, or cheap places, it adds time but makes for a memorable journey. When our family was faced with a 21 hour drive we opted to spread it out over 3 days and stopped in at little museums, aquariums, a cave tour, a mall with a huge old merry-go-round inside, Hershey, Pennsylvania, a state park and other neat stops along the way. Before your trip make a list of the cities you will be driving through and then Google the area to see if there are any neat places to stop that might be a perfect side trip for your kids. Taking these moments where and if possible can relieve a lot of the stress and tedium of a long drive with the kids.

By planning ahead for fun you are sure to arrive a much happier family and will have made positive car trip memories that will last a lifetime. Happy Trails!

How to Draw Great Cartoons - Step by Step

Learning to draw cartoons is not nearly as hard as you might be thinking it is. There are, in fact, many, many ways you can learn how to draw cartoons step by step. We are going to talk about some of the most popular options in the following article. By taking a look at the tips provided, you will be drawing your own cartoons in no time!

Now, naturally, one of the best ways to learn how to draw is to take a class. The good news is that there are classes for all ages and all skill levels. In elementary school, middle school, high school, and college, there are always art and drawing classes. Elementary schools usually make them mandatory and they may not cover cartoons, but the electives in your later years should. If they do not, then there is always the option of seeing if there are drawing classes being offered at local museums, libraries, and even other schools.

Books are another great way to learn the step by step method for drawing cartoons. There is no limit to the number of books you can find. The best part is that, again, you can find books for any and all skill levels. If you are a beginner, there is a book for you. There are books for people who have never tried to draw anything in their lives.

With drawing, however, sometimes seeing how it is done can be the best way to learn. That is why seeking a class can be so helpful. Failing that, however, you can also ask around to see if someone could teach you in a one on one setting.

Failing that, the internet can be your best friend. You can find a lot of videos aimed towards the step by step process of drawing cartoons. For that matter, there are instructional DVDs which can offer you the same help.

Making a Pleated Valance

When making a pleated valance, we first suggest that a pattern be made on paper. Six inches should be allowed for each pleat with space between each pleat of eight inches in width. Let's assume, for example, that a valance is to be made into five pleats. It will be necessary to allow 30" for the pleats. There are to be 6 spaces between the pleats of 8" each, making a total of 48".

The material needed at the two ends to turn the corners and reach the window trim should be at least 4" on each end, making 8" for two turnbacks. Add 1/2" at each end for hems, making 1" additional. The total width of material needed is 30" plus 48" plus 8" plus 1" = 87". When the pleats are drawn together, as indicated in the illustration, the final width of the valance is 57". The valance may be made smaller or larger by reducing or increasing the spaces between the pleats.

Most materials are not sufficiently wide for valances and have to be pieced. If a valance board is not used the 4" for the turn-backs at the sides will not he necessary. In the latter case an inch or two on each side may he turned under or cut off, according to the width of the window or the inside corner blocks.

Valance boards should be about 4 inches wide and long enough to come to the edge of the window casing. The top of the valance board should be on the level with the upper edge of the window trim or casing. For a well finished effect, the board should be covered with lining similar to that used to line the material. The valance is then tacked on to the edge of the valance board.

If a curtain rod is to be used for the valance, triple rods may be purchased. The inner rod to be used for the glass curtains, the middle one for the over-draperies and the outside one for the valance. Valances may be attached to the curtain rod. Hooks are sewed on the back into the pleats when the pleats are being made. Extra hooks may be placed between the pleats which help to keep the heading upright. Rings are sometimes used instead of hooks and they are slipped over the rod.

After the paper pattern is completed, we would suggest cutting a model out of muslin or other cheap material, pin the pleats in place, try the model at the window to see how it fits and at the same time determine its height. The height of the valance is determined by the height of the window.

A good general proportion to follow is to make the valance one-sixth of the height of the curtain treatment. If the window is six feet and the curtains stop at the window apron, the valance should be twelve inches deep. If, however, the curtains go to the floor, the average height of a window from the top of the window casing to the floor is 9 feet, making the valance in this case 18" deep.

The valance is lined by placing the right side of the lining and material together, cutting the lining so it extends 1/2" beyond the material at the bottom. Stitch across the top and at the sides. Turn the valance inside out so that the wrong sides are together and baste across the lower edge, 1/2" lining showing beyond the edge of the bottom of the material.

If a fringe or other edging is to be used, it is placed underneath next to the lining upside down so that the top edge of the fringe is even with the edge of the lining and will not be noticeable against any wood corner blocks With the fringe and lining in position, stitch together, then turn the edge of the lining and fringe up over the front edge of the material and sew neatly together for these stitches will show on the back and front. Remove the basting threads that are left.

To make the pleats, draw the material together as indicated on the pattern where 6" has been allowed for each pleat and baste together. The fold is then made into a box pleat or pinch pleat. A pinch pleat is made by gathering the 0" fold together and dividing it into three small folds and sewing the three folds securely in place.

A box pleat is made by drawing the material together and getting the effect of a straight pleat as shown in the illustrations previously referred to. For making shaped valances, it is advisable to first make a paper pattern and place it in position in order to study its lines and proportions. For accuracy fold the paper in the middle and draw half of the design. Cut the other half by it.
